Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University implemented the National Adult Education and Extension Programme as per the guidance of University Grants Commission, New Delhi with an aim to eradicate illiteracy involving university and other affiliated colleges in national importance programme in the year 1978-79.

      The Adult, Continuing Education and Extension Center established under the scheme of UGC was initially taken into hand the National Adult Education Programme (NAEP) at the end of the year 1978 as per the guidelines of UGC and acceptance from Government of Maharashtra with a view to educate the illiterate people within the jurisdiction of university area with sanctioning core staff-coordinator (1) and Project Officer (2). As per the census report out of six districts, four districts i.e. Jalna, Parbhani, Nanded and Beed were below national literacy average rate. Initially 45 colleges of six districts were involved in NAEP by financial assistance directly to the colleges. After reviewing the NAEP the UGC provided the financial assistance to the colleges through university w.e.f. 01-10-1983. The government of India introduced 20 point programme for national development in which the programme of eradication of illiteracy was incorporated under point No. 16 (b) of the new 20 point the UGC sanctioned 560 Adult Education Centers out of 30 per university department and 530 for colleges. The Adult Education Centers reduced 20% each year as directed. 

            Meanwhile taking into account the importance of the centre the UGC sanctioned the following core and ministerial staff to the centre as follows:

            Simultaneously the UGC added Continuing Education club and Planning Forum in the programme. The university implemented these programmes very successfully. 

            As per Education policy of 1968 mass programme for functional literacy added with the previous programme. “Each One Teach One” or “Each One Teach Five” scheme implemented by involving NSS, NCC AND Non-NSS students voluntarily. After successful implementation of the above programme in May, 1988. “Area Development Approach Scheme” suggested by the UGC, in which comprising 5000 population near the vicinity of the college adopted for implementation of area development approach scheme. In which the following activities are undertaken: 

               i.      Adult Education Centre to eradicate illiteracy.

             ii.      Continuing Education Programme to update skill of adult learner and self employment.

            iii.      Population Education Club to aware the students and community about health, hygiene, environment, adoption of small family norms and sanitation.

           iv.      Jan Shikshan Nilayam – an information window to provide news papers, reading material books, sports material to the learners. 

The centre base programme were closed and total literacy campaign implemented through university and colleges as per norms of Government of India and UGC upto the end of 8th Five year Plan. As advised in the 9th plan guidelines of the UGC nomenclature of Department has been changed from Adult, Continuing Education and Extension Centre to the Department of Adult, Continuing and Extension Services by amendment of statute 186 under Section 52(4) of the Maharashtra University Act, 1994. The Hon’ble Chancellor accorded his assent to the amendment to the statute 186 relating to addition of view Department under the faculty of Social Sciences as passed by the Senate at its meeting held on 28th November, 2001.

            The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor in his emergency powers conferred upon him under section 14(7) of the Maharashtra University Act, 1994 us pleased to redesignate the posts of core staff of the Department as follows as indicated in 10th Five Year Plan guidelines of UGC. Director – Professor and Head, Assistant Director – Reader, Project Officer – Lecturer possessing the same status and privileges (except vacation and working hours) as teachers in other University Department.

 Courses Available 

            The Department of Adult, Continuing Education & Extension Services offered following courses.

Diploma:

A I] P.G. Diploma in Adult Continuing and Extension Education:

Elegibility: Candidates who have completed their graduation in any discipline are eligible to take admission for the P.G. Diploma in Adult Continuing and Extension Education.

Duration: P.G. Diploma in Adult Continuing and Extension Education is one year full time course. 

Intake Capcity:The intake capacity for the course is limited up to 45 students per batch. 

Fees:The total Annual fees for the course will be Rs. 2400. Apart from the annual fees, the candidate whose admission is confirmed has to pay the Examination fee Rs. 290.

A II] Post Masters Diploma in Councelling: 

Elegibility: Candidates who have completed their graduation in any discipline are eligible to take admission for the Post Masters Diploma in Councelling. 

Duration:   Post Masters Diploma in Councelling is one year full time course. 

Intake Capcity:The intake capacity for the course is limited up to 08 students per batch. 

Fees:The total Annual fees for the course will be Rs. 2400. Apart from the annual fees, the candidate whose admission is confirmed has to pay the Examination fee Rs. 400.

Facilities

The department have independent building and sufficient space, cabins for faculty, seminar hall, E-leartning AC lab and also have one Jeep, film projector, screen, VCR, Tape-recorder, two laptops, LCD projector, Digital Camera(Sony Handy Cam), Web camera and each faculty have an independent computer. These are physical facilities available with the department.

Any Other:

The department provide trainings for upgrade skills of the employee as well as outside target groups, such as for self-help group of women, E-learning training for school teachers, placement for students and unemployed youths. This type of work done by the department accepting regular work.

 Academic Activity: 

            The department of Adult, Continuing Education is playing a major role in Extension avtivities involving sources, resources, faculties , laboratories and labs of the university to chane the life style of the community as a whole.The department is conducting academic activities particularly in self-supported courses as well as diplomas in Adult, Continuing Education & Extension management & post masters diploma in counseling.
